Sustainable Materials
ABOUT ORGANICS
Certified “Organic” fabric is third-party certified to be grown and manufactured without toxic chemicals.
Cotton is one of the most widely grown and chemical-intensive crops in the world. “At least 8,000 chemicals are used to turn raw materials into textiles and 25% of the world’s pesticides are used to grow non-organic cotton. This causes irreversible damage to people and the environment, and still two thirds of a garment’s carbon footprint will occur after it is purchased.” According to Earth Pledge, a non-profit organization (NPO)
Though all cotton has a large carbon footprint for its cultivation and production, organic cotton is considered a more sustainable choice for fabric, as it is completely free of destructive toxic pesticides and chemical fertilizers.
ABOUT BAMBOO
There are two methods by which bamboo may be processed into fiber for fabric one is earth friendly the other is not and is known as rayon. Sustainable bamboo is made through a mechanical process where the stalks are crushed and natural enzymes break them down further, allowing fibers to be combed out. Bamboo fabric is known for its softness and boasts strong absorbency and anti-microbial properties and also absorbs greenhouse gases during its life cycle and grows quickly and plentifully without pesticides.
ABOUT HEMP
Hemp is the name of the soft, durable fiber that is cultivated from plants of the Cannabis genus, cultivated for industrial and commercial (non-drug) use. Some believe hemp is one of the best choices for sustainable fabrics due to its ease of growth, and requires few pesticides and no herbicides to grow.
